Recap: BYU vs. Long Beach State

Provo, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Haws paced five teammates in double figures with 21 points, as the BYU Cougars outlasted the Long Beach State 49ers, 95-90, in the season opener for both teams at the Marriott Center.

Skyler Halford tallied 18 points and seven assists off the bench for BYU (1-0). Chase Fischer registered 17 points, shooting 4-of-8 from 3-point range, while Anson Winder and Isaac Neilson netted 12 and 10, respectively.

For LBSU (0-1), Mike Caffey stuffed the stat sheet with 26 points, six assists, five rebounds and five steals but also committed seven turnovers. Deontae North and McKay LaSalle both scored 16 points and Jack Williams poured in 10.

Both teams shot greater than 50 percent from the field in the first half. McKay drained a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the frame to give LBSU a 47-46 lead heading into intermission.

With the score tied at 66-66 with under nine minutes to play, BYU pulled away thanks to a 9-0 run.

Both LBSU (13-of-22) and BYU (11-of-24) were active and efficient from 3-point range. The difference was made at the free-throw line, where the Cougars outscored the 49ers, 28-11.
