BYU Cougars VS. Ark.-Little Rock Trojans

Arkansas-Little Rock (1-0) at BYU (1-0)

GAME NOTES: A couple of teams shooting to start 2-0 in 2014-15 get together at the Marriott Center on Tuesday night, as the BYU Cougars host the Trojans of Arkansas-Little Rock as part of the Maui Invitational.

The Cougars, who compete as a member of the West Coast Conference in basketball, are coming off a 95-90 victory over Long Beach State in the opener on Friday. Outside of the trip to Maui next week, BYU doesn't play a true road game until Dec. 2 when it challenges Utah State in Logan.

Meanwhile the Trojans, members of the Sun Belt Conference, improved to 35-2 in home openers since moving to the Division I level, thanks to a 77-64 triumph over Arkansas-Monticello.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the hardwood.

The Trojans were less than hospitable to Arkansas-Monticello in the opener, forcing the visitors into 17 turnovers, but the Boll Weevils certainly made things interesting by shooting an impressive 10-of-18 behind the 3-point line in the 13-point loss. James Reid led four UALR players in double figures with his 12 points, followed by James White with 11 and seven rebounds. Mareik Isom and Ben Dillard both contributed 10 points for the hosts, while Roger Woods added seven points and offset his five turnovers by clearing a game-high 13 rebounds.

As a team, the Trojans registered a 42-33 rebounding edge in the opener, but still they had their issues, particularly at the free-throw line where they knocked down only half of their 16 opportunities.

Tyler Haws led a total of five players in double figures as he delivered 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor in the win over Long Beach State at home in the Marriott Center. Skyler Halford also provided the program with a huge lift off the bench with his 18 points and seven assists, followed by Chase Fischer with 17 points and five dishes as well. Reserves Anson Winder and Isaac Neilson pitched in with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for a squad that not only shot 51.9 percent from the field, but also an impressive 11- of-24 behind the 3-point line.

In a game that featured nine ties and 10 lead changes, LBSU led by as many as five points, but the visitors were charged with 18 turnovers and knocked down a mere 11-of-20 at the charity stripe.

Not too many teams are able to enter the Marriott Center and exit feeling good about themselves. Chances are that's the way UALR will feel when it clashes with a focused and aggressive BYU squad.
