BUTLER BULLDOGS

Butler Bulldogs

Butler Bulldogs VS. Providence Friars

Providence (11-4) at Butler (11-4)

GAME NOTES: After watching a five-game win streak come to an end, the Providence Friars will look to get back in the win column as they travel to face the Butler Bulldogs in a Big East Conference showdown at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

After losing three straight games earlier this season to end an unbeaten record, the Friars rebounded with five wins in a row. That win streak came to an end against Marquette on Saturday, 75-66. Providence is now 0-3 on the road this season.

Butler has won three of its last four games, including a 73-69 edging of St. John's on Saturday. The Bulldogs are 11-4 this season, and own a perfect 7-0 mark at home as they get set to entertain the Friars.

Tuesday's clash will mark the third meeting all-time between Providence and Butler. The Friars own a 2-0 series record against the Bulldogs after sweeping both head-to-head meetings last season. Providence took down Butler, 87-81, in Indianapolis last February.

Providence and Marquette battled to a 33-33 tie at halftime in Milwaukee on Saturday, but it was the Golden Eagles who caught fire in the second period. Marquette netted 48.1 percent of its field goal tries compared to Butler's 34.3 percent shooting mark in the frame that allowed the home Eagles to earn the Big East victory. LaDontae Henton continued his dominance this season, with a 28-point effort to lead the Friars in scoring. Kris Dunn chipped in with 11 points and eight assists, although he did turn the ball over a team- high eight times.

Henton is unquestionably the leader of the team this season, as the senior forward paces both the team and the Big East Conference in scoring at 21.5 ppg, connecting on 48.8 percent of his shots. Dunn (12.6 ppg) and Tyler Harris (11.4 ppg) round out a trio of double-digit scorers for the Friars, who come into this clash netting 69.9 ppg. Dunn leads both Providence and the Big East with a 7.4 apg margin, and Henton's 5.5 rpg mark is a team high. The Friars are allowing opponents to score just 62.0 ppg this season on 41.5 percent shooting.

It seemed like a daunting task for Butler to travel to Queens and beat St. John's, especially after the Red Storm took a 30-26 lead at halftime. But the Bulldogs made a whopping 61.5 percent of their shots from the field in the second half, and went 12-of-14 from the free-throw line in the frame to grab a lead and the victory on the road against St. John's. Kellen Dunham was at the center of the winning effort for Butler after netting 28 points, with a 6-of-7 shooting mark from 3-point range. Alex Barlow chipped in with 15 points, and Roosevelt Jones contributed 14. Kameron Woods pulled down 10 rebounds, and nearly missed a double-double with eight points. It was the first win for coach Chris Holtmann, who had the interim tag removed on his position just prior to Saturday's game.

Dunham's outburst against the Red Storm boosted his scoring average to 16.9 ppg, which leads Butler's roster and is good for third in the Big East. Dunham and Jones, who chips in 11.2 ppg, are the top scorers for a Bulldogs team netting 70.3 ppg on 44.7 percent shooting from the floor. But it's been Butler's scoring defense that has stolen the show this season. The Bulldogs are allowing just 57.7 ppg to opponents, which is the lowest total in the conference. Woods (8.9 rpg) is the team leader and is tied for the conference lead in rebounding.

Providence's 69.9 ppg average is actually the lowest offensive scoring total in the Big East this season. Going on the road against a Butler team that is flying high following a Top-25 upset under a new official head coach is a bad combination for the Friars. Henton can't be the only active one in this contest.

Predicted Outcome

Butler 73, Providence 67
