Creighton (9-10) at Butler (13-6)
GAME NOTES: Having lost their last seven games in a row, the Creighton Bluejays will desperately look for a win as they travel to face the Butler Bulldogs in a Big East Conference battle at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Creighton has really struggled recently, and owns just a 9-10 record this season factoring in the current slide. The Bluejays are coming off a 74-65 defeat at the hands of Providence - the second loss to the Friars this season. Creighton is 1-5 on the road, and is 0-6 against Big East competition.
Butler saw a mini two-game win streak come to an end on Saturday against a hot Georgetown team, 61-59. The Bulldogs dipped to 13-6 with the loss, but will try and use their home court to their advantage, where they are 8-1 on the season. Against Big East foes, Butler is 3-3.
Creighton and Butler have met nine times on the floor before. The Bluejays lead the series, 6-3, which includes a two-game sweep of Butler last season.
It was Creighton's turn to host Providence on Saturday, as the two teams met in Rhode Island earlier in the campaign. But the home advantage didn't matter much, as the Friars connected on 48 percent of their shots in the contest, while the Bluejays made only 39.6 percent of theirs. James Milliken led the way for Creighton in the contest, netting 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Rick Kreklow chipped in with 12 points off the bench, and Devin Brooks added 10 points in the defeat. Austin Chatman was held scoreless in the contest.
Despite being held scoreless, Chatman still heads into Wednesday leading the Bluejays in scoring this season. The guard is averaging 11.2 ppg on just 36.5 percent shooting from the floor, but he's also distributed a team-high 80 assists through 19 games. Isaiah Zierden is the only other Creighton player to own a double-digit point total, checking in at 10.0 ppg. Brooks and Will Artino each lead the Bluejays on the boards, grabbing 4.7 rpg apiece. After being known as a powerhouse offensive team last season, Creighton has fallen to 68.2 ppg this season - second to last in the conference rankings - on just 41.6 percent shooting. The team's defense hasn't been stellar either, allowing 65.5 ppg to opponents.
Butler pulled ahead of Georgetown at halftime, and led at the intermission, 31-27. But the host Hoyas connected on 48.1 percent of their shots in the second half and was able to erase the deficit for the victory over the visiting Bulldogs. Butler shot a respectable 44 percent from the floor in the defeat, and was led in scoring by Roosevelt Jones, who netted a game-high 28 points. Kellen Dunham was the only other Bulldogs player to net a double- digit scoring figure, though, contributing 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
The 28-point outburst by Jones certainly helped out his scoring average this season, but it's Dunham that checks in at the top of Butler's scoring leaderboard with 16.6 ppg - good for fourth in the Big East. Jones chips in with 13.1 ppg on 45 percent shooting from the field, and adds in 5.7 rpg - second on the team behind Kameron Woods, who brings down 9.3 rpg, also a Big East Conference best. Butler's scoring offense averages 70.7 ppg this season, while its defense limits opponents to just 60.2 ppg - the best scoring defense in the conference rankings.
Creighton is in the midst of an absolute tailspin, and going on the road to face Butler in a building where the Bulldogs are 8-1 this season likely won't help the situation.
