Chattanooga (1-1) at Butler (1-0)
GAME NOTES: The Butler Bulldogs are in the midst of a three-game homestand to tip off the 2014-15 campaign, as they host the Chattanooga Mocs in non- conference play on Tuesday night.
Butler, which now competes as a member of the Big East Conference, started the new season in style over the weekend as it crushed Maine, 99-57. The team will also welcome Loyola Maryland to town later this week before heading to the Bahamas to take part in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Meanwhile the Mocs already have a pair of games under their belt, splitting the first two outings of the season. First, Chattanooga made quick work of Hiwasee (110-53) on Friday before being pummeled by third-ranked Wisconsin on the road, 89-45, on Sunday afternoon.
The only previous meeting between the programs took place early in the 2011-12 campaign as the Bulldogs grabbed a 57-46 win at home over Chattanooga.
Against one of the toughest defenses in Division I the last several years, the Mocs made only eight first-half field goals and shot 32.1 percent for the entire game versus the Badgers in Madison over the weekend. Chattanooga made good on just 6-of-22 from behind the 3-point line and also struggled at the free-throw line (3-of-10), en route to the lopsided loss.
Ronrico White came off the bench to tally a team-best 15 points and Casey Jones pitched in with 12, the latter shooting only 5-of-14 from the floor. Justin Tuoyo accounted for another 11 points, but no one else on the roster made more than a single field goal.
Still very early in the season, Jones has come up with 12.0 ppg, Tuoyo and White another 11.0 ppg each, with the middle man also stepping up and pulling down 8.0 rpg. However, a major concern for the team has to be a woeful 58.8 percent effort at the charity stripe.
Kellen Dunham dropped in 18 points, on 5-of-7 shooting behind the 3-point line, as four of five starters scored in double figures and a total of six players tallied at least 11 points for the Bulldogs in the crushing win over visiting Maine. Roosevelt Jones pitched in with 14 points and nine assists, Andrew Chrabascz 13 points, Kelan Martin and Austin Etherington 12 and 11 points, respectively, off the bench and Kameron Woods 10 to go along with six rebounds and four dishes.
Dunham is coming off a 2013-14 campaign in which he led Butler in scoring with 16.4 ppg, making him the only returner who scored more than 7.5 ppg for the squad. Although it should be noted that the Bulldogs pride themselves on keeping scores low, as they limited foes to just 66.6 ppg a season ago.
Cruising against Hiwasee and then being humbled by Wisconsin, the Mocs should prepare for falling somewhere in between those two efforts when they meet Butler, although the outcome should be the same as Sunday's road test.
