Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-5) vs. Bucknell (1-4)
GAME NOTES: In the consolation game of the Progressive Legends Classic Toledo sub-regional, the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks will collide with the Bucknell Bison at Savage Arena.
There has not been much to celebrate for UMES this season, with the Hawks losing five of their first six contests, including a 69-55 setback against Detroit on Monday night, which put them into the predicament of playing in this consolation contest. They will return to action against Fordham next, the last game before their home opener against UMBC.
Since defeating Marist, 75-72, in the season opener, there have been nothing but losses for Bucknell, which has dropped four straight. The Bison were especially weak on Monday against host Toledo, as they were trampled by a score of 92-65. After this event, they will head out to play Penn State.
These teams have never matched up before on the basketball court.
Michael Myers may have scored a game-high 21 points for UMES on Monday but it didn't come in a winning effort. The Hawks did have a 29-27 lead at halftime against Detroit, but only made 30.8 percent of their field goal tries in the final 20 minutes, including a paltry 1-of-11 showing from 3-point range. The Hawks didn't do a very good job of holding onto the ball in the contest, and found themselves on the wrong end of a 29-9 deficit in points off turnovers.
The Hawks cannot afford to lose so many offensive possessions, especially if they continue to score at the meager pace they have to this point. They are netting only 52.8 points per game, while shooting a measly 37.2 percent from the field. Myers (12.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) has done what he can to keep the offense moving, shooting 51.3 percent from the field as the team's top scorer as well as rebounder. However, Devin Martin (11.8 ppg) and Devon Walker (9.2 ppg) are the only other players on the roster netting more than six points per game.
Bucknell's matchup with Toledo was over by halftime, with the Bison entering the locker room down, 44-17. They only made 25.9 percent of their shots from the floor in the frame and were never able to recover, despite netting 51.4 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Also hurting the cause were deficits in points off turnovers (12-0) and second-chance points (20-10). J.C. Show scored 10 points off the bench as the only player in double figures in the losing effort.
Normally Chris Hass (16.8 ppg) is the top scoring option for the Bison, but he had only nine points on 3-of-9 shooting against Toledo. Without Hass, Bucknell is clearly in deep trouble, as there are no other players on the roster who have shown consistent scoring ability. Dom Hoffman ranks second on the team at just eight points per game.
This could very well be a shootout between Hass and Myers. Expect the Bison to win in that case, as Hass has a bit more support in the scoring department.
