Providence, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Tavon Blackmon netted 18 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor to help the Brown Bears defeat the Saint Peter's Peacocks, 70-58, in the season opener for both sides at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

Cedric Kuakumensah posted 15 points and blocked three shots for Brown (1-0), which also received 13 points courtesy of Rafael Maia. Steven Spieth paced the Bears on the glass with eight boards.

For the Peacocks (0-1), Quadir Welton tallied 16 points and seven rebounds. Marvin Dominique grabbed eight rebounds, while he and Desi Washington scored 11 points each.

Brown took a 32-22 lead into the intermission after it connected on 57.1 percent of its field goal attempts in the opening stanza. The Peacocks hit on just 2-of-11 tries from beyond the arch and did not attempt a free throw in the first half.

Saint Peter's could not find its touch after the break, as it was limited to 33.3 percent efficiency from the floor including a 4-of-15 clip from 3-point range in the second period. The Bears converted 20-of-24 tries at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes of the contest to seal the victory.

Despite the loss, the Peacocks outscored Brown, 24-12, inside the paint and also, 22-11, in points off turnovers.
