GAME NOTES: The Brown Bears will close out a two-game homestand at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday evening when they welcome the Penn Quakers to town for an Ivy League showdown.

Penn's season as a whole has not gone smoothly, as it sits with just a 6-14 overall record. However, it has improved during the Ivy League campaign with a 3-3 mark. The Quakers had won two straight prior to their 69-54 loss at Yale on Friday night to fall to a mere 1-9 on the road.

Brown has been much better than Penn this season at 12-9 overall and 4-3 in league play, although it has been on the downswing of late with losses in two of its last three. The Bears dropped a 69-65 decision to Princeton on Friday to fall to 7-3 on their home floor.

Penn has a dominating 101-21 advantage in the all-time series with Brown, which includes six straight wins.

The Quakers trailed by three at the half on Friday night but could not overcome that deficit in the second stanza, eventually falling by 15. They were able to hold Yale to a mere 34.6 percent field goal shooting, but they made good on just 39.6 percent from the floor themselves, got outscored at the free-throw line, 30-14, and lost the turnover battle, 20-11. Tony Hicks was only 5-of-15 from the field but drained 8-of-9 at the free-throw line for a team-high 19 points. Darien Nelson-Henry tallied 12 points and eight rebounds, while Fran Dougherty poured in 10 points.

Penn typically puts up solid offensive production, shooting 45.1 percent from the field for 70.0 ppg, but while it holds opponents to a mere 42 percent shooting, its scoring defense (76.5 ppg) has been a detriment and it lives in the red in terms of its rebounding (-2.9) and turnover (-3.0) margins. Hicks leads the way with 15.5 ppg on a modest 42.5 percent from the field. Miles Cartwright brings 11.3 ppg to the table, while Dougherty (12.5 ppg, 7.2 rpg) and Nelson-Henry (10.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg) man the paint.

The Bears held a three-point lead at intermission versus Princeton and continued to lead with under 12 minutes to play, but it fell victim to a 10-0 Princeton run and could never recover down the stretch. They were outshot from the field, 51.9 percent to 41.8 percent, and were outrebounded by a 36-27 margin. Sean McGonagill paced the losing effort with 16 points, six assists and three steals. Leland King came off the bench to pour in 15 points, while Rafael Maia chipped in 13 points.

Brown has found success this season behind its stellar defensive attack, as it holds opponents to a mere 38.4 percent field goal shooting for 65.4 ppg. Offensively, it has been solid as well, shooting 43.5 percent for 70.9 ppg. McGonagill is one of the Ivy's most well-rounded players with 18.0 ppg (on 70- of-169 from 3-point range) to go with 4.2 rpg, 3.5 apg and more than a steal per tilt. The squad also has a sturdy frontcourt duo to rely on in Maia (10.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg) and Cedric Kuakumensah (6.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.6 bpg), although the latter shoots just 34.8 percent from the field.

Brown may have lost control of its contest with Yale, but it has played well on its home floor this season and should be able to dismiss the inconsistent Quakers.
