Marist (1-4) at Boston College (2-3)
GAME NOTES: The Boston College Eagles tip off a season-long, six-game homestand on Monday night when they welcome the Marist Red Foxes to Conte Forum.
Marist took part in the Gulf Coast showcase last week, and after suffering early-round losses to Florida Gulf Coast (58-43) and Hawaii (62-55), it salvaged its stay in the event by winning the seventh-place game over Fresno State, 68-64. The win halted the Red Foxes' season-opening, four-game losing streak.
Boston College also participated in a holiday tournament recently, making an appearance in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The Eagles earned an opening-round win over New Mexico, but subsequently lost to West Virginia (70-66) and Dayton (65-53) to fall to 2-3 on the season.
In the only previous meeting between the teams back in 2000, Boston College came away with a 74-65 win.
The Red Foxes saw their 20-point, second-half lead over Fresno State dwindle to just two in the final minute, but they were able to hold on for their first victory of the season. They outshot Fresno State from the field, 47.7 percent to 42.6 percent, and had a strong showing from 3-point range (9-of-21). Chavaughn Lewis poured in a team-high 28 points while helping out across the stat sheet with seven rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Phillip Lawrence contributed 19 points and Manny Thomas added 13 points to the winning effort. It was a rare performance for Marist, which scores just 60.0 ppg this season with lackluster percentages from the field (.392) and 3-point range (.316). It also gets outrebounded by a margin of 9.4 boards per game. Khallid Hart (24.5 ppg) was outstanding early in the year but is out with a foot injury for at least the next two weeks. Lewis has been a strong scorer as well with 19.4 ppg, while adding a team-best 5.8 rpg and Lawrence adds 10.8 ppg to the mix.
The Eagles were underwhelming in their finale of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, as they shot just 34 percent from the field, including a woeful 2-of-21 from 3- point range, en route to a 12-point setback. It was also hindered by a game- high 17 turnovers. Eddie Odio and Olivier Hanlan were the only players to score in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. The struggles were hardly a surprise for Boston College, which scores a lowly 61.6 ppg on 41 percent shooting this season, which includes just 19.8 percent efficiency from beyond the arc. Luckily it is saved by solid defense, as the team allows 64.2 ppg. Hanlan is the top scoring option with 17.6 ppg, although he's shooting just 61.5 percent from the free-throw line and has more turnovers (21) than assists (15). Aaron Brown puts up 13.0 ppg, but no one else has more than 7.8 ppg.
Even though Boston College hasn't done a lot to impress this season, it will enjoy a return to its home arena against an underwhelming non-conference foe.
