Boston College Eagles

Boston College Eagles VS. Dayton Flyers

Dayton (2-1) vs. Boston College (2-2)

GAME NOTES: In the third-place game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, the Dayton Flyers meet up with the Boston College Eagles at Coliseo Roberto Clemente.

After surviving at the buzzer against Texas A&M in the opening round, Dayton was not so lucky against No. 17 Connecticut on Friday. The Flyers took a 74-65 loss in that contest to advance to this portion of the tournament. They will be back in action against Illinois-Chicago next weekend.

Boston College narrowly knocked off New Mexico in the first round (69-65), but the magic ran out on Friday against West Virginia, with the Eagles falling in a 70-60 final. They are now an even 2-2 this season. Their next six games will all be at home beginning against Marist on Dec. 1.

An 87-71 win by Dayton in 2012 came in the only other meeting between these two programs.

Dayton simply ran out of gas against UConn on Friday. The Flyers connected on 53.8 percent of their shots in the first half and went into the break tied at 41-41 with the Huskies. However, in the second half, they cooled to just 28.6 percent to let the game slip away. Jordan Sibert scored a team-high 18 points, but he made just one of his seven shots from 3-point range. Dyshawn Pierre contributed a double-double consisting of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Pierre has easily been the most consistent performer in the early going for Dayton. He is averaging a team-high 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while sinking 56 percent of his shots from the floor, including a pair of 3- pointers. Sibert is getting every opportunity to pace the team offensively, as his 34 shots lead the way. However, he has only made 10 of those attempts, while averaging 12 points per game. Kendall Pollard netted 15 points off the bench against UConn, and he is the third member of the team averaging in double figures.

Despite another strong outing from Olivier Hanlan, Boston College fell just short against West Virginia. Hanlan scored 23 points in the losing effort, during which the Eagles shot 54.6 percent from the field. However, they turned the ball over 21 times.

Stopping Hanlan will be the top priority for Dayton, or any team that plays Boston College for that matter. He has poured in 75 combined points in the first four games, for a scoring average just below 20 (19.5 ppg). In addition, he leads the team in assists (12) and steals (nine). However, he is also one of three players on the team with more than 10 turnovers (17). Aaron Brown (14.8 ppg) is the only other player on the roster averaging in double figures, despite shooting just 38.3 percent from the floor. Patrick Heckmann (8.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg) is the third scorer and top rebounder for a largely undersized squad.

There is no questioning Hanlan's playmaking abilities. Unfortunately, he does not have enough help from the rest of the team. Dayton has a more balanced roster and should prove it on Sunday.
