Tennessee (12-6) at Arkansas (15-4)
GAME NOTES: The Arkansas Razorbacks put a brief two-game win streak on the line on Tuesday evening, as they play host to the Tennessee Volunteers in an SEC showdown at Bud Walton Arena.
Mike Anderson's Razorbacks are 15-4 on the season and sport a 4-2 league ledger. Arkansas, which was among the Top-25 just a couple of weeks ago, enters the contest off a pair of narrow victories over Alabama (93-91) and most recently, Missouri (61-60). Bud Walton Arena has been a safe haven for the Hogs, who are 11-1 at home this season.
Donnie Tyndall is in his first season at Tennessee. The Vols are 12-6 overall and also 4-2 in conference play. The team had a three-game win streak halted with Saturday's 67-61 road loss at Texas A&M.
Tennessee holds a 19-14 series advantage against Arkansas and has won two straight and four of the last five meetings. The Volunteers are seeking a regular-season sweep after posting a 81-74 victory in Knoxville back on Jan. 22.
Texas A&M opened the second half with a 20-5 run and took control against Tennessee on Saturday, handing the Vols a six-point loss on their home floor. Tennessee was led in the scoring column by Kevin Punter's 17 points. Punter, who was 5-of-7 from 3-point range, was joined in double figures by Josh Richardson and Robert Hubbs III, who chipped in with 12 points apiece. UT shot just .385 from the floor in the game, compared to A&M's .481 effort.
The Volunteers aren't known for flashy offensive numbers this season (64.2 ppg), but instead, rely on gritty defensive play, as the team yields just 62.3 ppg on .410 shooting, while forcing just under 14 turnovers per contest. Richardson, a 6-foot-6 senior, leads the team in scoring (15.5 ppg) assists (61) and steals (37). Punter is second in scoring (10.7 ppg). Both guys are shooting over 40 percent from behind the arc and have combined for 49 3- pointers to date.
Arkansas shot an ugly 37 percent from the floor against Missouri, but that was offset by a whopping 16 offensive rebounds, as the Razorbacks came from behind to earn the one-point win over the Tigers. Senior Alandise Harris led the team with 14 points in the win. Sophomore Bobby Portis was instrumental once again, as he posted his fifth straight double-double, finishing up with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
The 6-11 Portis is a star in the making. Arkansas' young forward is among the SEC's best, as his 17.5 ppg leads the conference and his 8.5 rpg ranks fourth in the SEC. Junior guard Michael Qualls can fill up the basket as well, ranking fourth in the SEC at 16.4 ppg. Senior guard Rashad Madden is a dual threat, as both a solid scorer (10.2 ppg) and deft distributor (4.9 apg - second in the SEC). The trio paces a team that leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally in scoring at a hefty 82.3 ppg.
Tennessee got the better of Arkansas two weeks ago, but the Razorbacks are awfully dangerous in their own building and should gain a little revenge with a win here.
