Oregon State (14-5) at Arizona State (10-10)
GAME NOTES: The Oregon State Beavers try to run their win streak to four in a row as they clash with fellow Pac-12 Conference member Arizona State on Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena.
A perfect 12-0 at home in Gill Coliseum in 2014-15, the Beavers now have to get on track when visiting opponents. The team is just 2-3 in true road dates and 2-5 overall when not in Corvallis. The team is coming off a 59-55 home win against USC last Saturday, moving it to 5-2 in league play.
The Sun Devils have split their first 20 games of the season, struggling quite a bit in the new calendar year with just two wins in seven chances. Over the weekend, the team was pitted against Stanford on the road and was treated to an 89-70 setback, snapping a two-game win streak for a program that is just 2-5 in conference play.
OSU won the first meeting of the season between the squads earlier this month in a 55-47 final at home, knotting up the all-time series at 41-41 in the process.
It wasn't pretty, but the Beavers managed to survive 39.2 percent shooting from the field and 6-of-19 out on the perimeter in the meeting against USC to come out on top. Gary Payton II registered a double-double consisting of 21 points and 10 rebounds, both of which were game highs, while Jarmal Reid and Olaf Schaftenaar contributed 14 and 11 points, respectively. Defensively, Oregon State limited the visitors to only 34.0 percent shooting from the field in a meeting that featured four ties and 12 lead changes.
Payton II, who earlier in the season logged just the second triple-double in program history, the other coming from his father many years before, leads the Beavers with 12.9 ppg and 8.1 rpg in conference play. He is also responsible for 22 assists and 20 steals, showing sure-handed efforts at both ends of the floor even though he has made just 22.7 percent of his 3-point tries. Langston Morris-Walker and Malcolm Duvivier pitch in with 10.6 and 10.4 ppg, respectively, for a group that is posting just 57.4 ppg.
Limited to just 20 minutes on the floor due to foul trouble, Shaquielle McKissic was held to only six points and four assists in the loss at Stanford over the weekend. But it wasn't just McKissic that performed below expectations, as all five starters failed to score in double figures. Savon Goodman came off the bench to offer up 18 points in only 19 minutes, but without support his effort went for naught.
Over the course of seven league bouts, the Sun Devils find themselves putting up a modest 62.6 ppg, but allowing 66.9 ppg to Pac-12 foes who are shooting 43.0 percent beyond the arc. McKissic is responsible for 9.7 ppg, but his 23.8 percent accuracy on the outside and lackluster 61.9 percent at the free-throw line doesn't help matters. Eric Jacobsen, who has somehow found a way to connect on a dismal 42.4 percent at the charity stripe, chimes in with 9.1 ppg.
One of the better defenses in the nation, the Beavers may be in enemy territory this week, but that doesn't mean Payton II and his cohorts are not prepared to put the squeeze on Arizona State.
