Detroit (6-6) at Arizona State (6-5)
GAME NOTES: A pair of struggling squads get together for a Tuesday matinee, as the Detroit Titans pay a visit to the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Detroit comes in at an even 6-6 on the season, but the team has stumbled of late in dropping verdicts to Wichita State (77-68), UCF (75-70) and Rhode Island (69-55) over the last 10 days. The Titans are just 1-4 in true road games, and this bout wraps up a three-game road trip. Detroit will play one more non-conference tilt (Dec. 30 vs. Oral Roberts) before tipping off its Horizon League schedule at Wright State on Jan. 2.
Arizona State is 6-1 at home this season, but the team has been horrific away from home in losing four times. The Sun Devils are currently mired in a two- game losing streak, with their most outing resulting in an 84-81 triple- overtime setback to visiting Lehigh on Saturday. ASU will also play just one more non-league game (vs. Harvard on Dec. 28) before beginning Pac-12 Conference action at arch-rival Arizona on Jan. 4.
Arizona State leads the all-time series with Detroit, 3-1, with the most recent meeting occurring during the 2013 NIT -- an 83-68 victory for the Sun Devils.
Juwan Howard, Jr. scored 17 points, but he was the only one to reach double figures as Detroit suffered a 14-point loss at Rhode Island on Saturday. The Titans shot just 35.2 percent from the field, which included a 4-of-15 showing from 3-point range. A total of 18 turnovers and a 26-13 deficit in points at the free-throw line also played a significant role in the disappointing outcome.
Howard is far and away the most productive player for Detroit, as he is averaging 19.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Moderate help comes from double-digit scorers Paris Bass (11.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Anton Wilson (10.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg). The team as a whole is generating 71.2 ppg while permitting 66.3 ppg, and it goads the opposition into nearly 16 turnovers per contest.
Savon Goodman came off the bench to post a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, recording his first career double-double, but that effort went for naught as Arizona State lost for the first time at home this season in three extra sessions to Lehigh over the weekend. Goodman went 9-of-11 from the floor, but the Sun Devils were successful on only 42.9 percent of their total shots, which included a 6-of-20 performance out on the perimeter. Chance Murray added 17 points, Shaquielle McKissic 13 points to go with nine boards, and Jonathan Gilling chipped in 11 points for ASU, which committed 19 turnovers, but forced 22. The Mountain Hawks drained nine 3-pointers in the game.
Despite appearing in only two games, Goodman (15.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg) is one of four double-digit scorers for the Sun Devils, and he currently ranks second on the team in rebounds. Among the players who have seen considerably more action, Gerry Blakes is netting 12.0 ppg to go with 5.0 rpg, while Eric Jacobsen (10.7 ppg, club-best 7.9 rpg), McKissik (10.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg) and Gilling (9.4 ppg) provide support when called upon. Arizona State is netting 73.3 ppg while permitting 65.5 ppg, and the team is +4.4 in rebounding margin, but -1.2 in turnover differential.
Both teams are chomping at the bit to get back into the win column, and the Sun Devils have the clear edge here. Howard is a standout performer for the Titans, but they lack the complementary pieces needed to combat a more well- rounded ASU squad.
