Hofstra (5-2) at Appalachian State (3-2)
GAME NOTES: Looking to extend a two-game winning streak, the Hofstra Pride will travel to face the Appalachian State Mountaineers in a non-conference affair at Holmes Convocation Center.
Hofstra has won back-to-back games by scoring at least 86 points. The Pride have been a very offensively driven team this season en route to the squad's 5-2 record. The Pride have won four of their last five contests.
Appalachian State enters the clash on a three-game winning streak, most recently defeating Jacksonville, 67-56, on the road. This game against the Pride represents just the second home contest for the Mountaineers this season.
All-time, Hofstra is 10-7 against members of the Sun Belt Conference. But this is Appalachian State's first year as a member of the SBC, and the two programs have never met on the hardwood before. Head coach Joe Mihalich however, has faced the Mountaineers three times before, and has won all three matchups.
Offensively, Hofstra has been on fire this season. That was the case yet again in the team's 88-74 victory over Norfolk State in its last outing. The Pride connected on 52.2 percent of their shots in the game, and made an impressive 14-of-25 from 3-point distance. Ameen Tanksley led the charge with 30 points for Hofstra, making a perfect 9-of-9 field goal tries from the floor. Juan'ya Green contributed 18 points with eight assists, and Brian Bernardi chipped in with 17 points and five rebounds. Dion Nesmith came off the bench to round out the group of double-digit scorers with 10.
Tanksley and Green, two transfers who became eligible to play at the start of this season for Hofstra, are dominating this season. Tanksley leads the team in scoring with an 18.4 ppg average, followed very closely by Green's 18.3 ppg mark. Tanksley is shooting 57.7 percent from the floor, and is second on the team in rebounding with a 5.9 rpg average (behind only Rokas Gustys' 7.2 rpg mark). Bernardi contributes 14.3 ppg this season, and Nesmith chips in 10.9 ppg for the Pride, who collectively are scoring 80.1 ppg on 47.7 percent shooting.
Appalachian State was able to pick up its third consecutive win with a 67-56 defeat of Jacksonville in the team's most recent outing. The Mountaineers shot 44.2 percent from the field, and connected on 20-of-30 from the free-throw line to help bury the Dolphins. Frank Eaves netted 19 points to pace Appalachian State, while Jake Babic chipped in with 13 points off the bench. Both Dustin Clarke and Chris Burgess contributed 10 points to help the winning cause. Defensively, the Mountaineers held Jacksonville to 37.8 percent shooting from the field.
Entering this matchup, Eaves leads the team in scoring with 17.8 ppg, though the guard is shooting just 33.9 percent from the floor. Burgess (10.8 ppg) and Tommy Spagnolo (10.4 ppg) round out the Mountaineers' trio of double-digit scorers so far this season. Appalachian State is netting 65.2 ppg on 40.2 percent shooting, but the team is giving up 70.0 ppg to opponents on 45 percent shooting, so containing the Pride may be difficult. Spagnolo leads the team in rebounding, averaging 8.0 boards per contest.
Appalachian State has the home advantage and the longer win streak entering this matchup, but that's about it. Eaves is a strong scorer, but the Mountaineers will likely find it difficult trying to contain both Tanksley and Green, who as a duo are pretty potent.
