Air Force Falcons VS. The Citadel Bulldogs

The Citadel (0-1) vs. Air Force (0-1)

GAME NOTES: Following losses on Friday in the first round of the All-Military Classic, the Citadel Bulldogs and Air Force Falcons will square off Saturday to determine a third-place finisher in non-conference action at Christl Arena.

The Citadel was leading VMI heading into the final seconds of play Friday in West Point, when a Trey Chapman steal and 3-pointer in the closing seconds lifted the Keydets over the Bulldogs, 66-65.

Air Force trailed Army by 10 points at halftime in the first round of the AMC on Friday, and couldn't completely make up the ground in the second half. The Falcons and Black Knights each shot over 49 percent from the floor, but it was the host Knights that earned the spot in the title match.

The Citadel and Air Force have met three times on the court in their series history, with the Bulldogs owning the 2-1 advantage. It was Air Force, though, that took the most recent decision back in 2012, 77-70, at the AMC in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Citadel went into halftime with a 38-32 advantage Friday against VMI after connecting on 64 percent of its shot attempts in the half. But the Bulldogs allowed VMI to battle back, as the Keydets connected on seven second-half 3- pointers, which included the final one by Chapman with mere seconds on the clock. Three players registered point totals in double figures for the Bulldogs in the contest, led by Aston Moore's 24.

Moore was the most heralded returning scorer for the Citadel in the offseason, and he showed just why he's the leader of this season's team with his 24-point performance against VMI. His scoring presence was vital, as was P.J. Horgan's, who poured in 14 points and added six rebounds in the loss. Quinton Marshall chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs fell short of reaching the AMC championship.

Air Force and Army put on an offensive show in the later game Friday night of the All-Military Classic, and the Falcons were the ones who out-shot the Black Knights with a 50-percent mark from the floor in both the first and second halves. But a 10-point deficit at halftime was simply too much for the Mountain West Conference Falcons to overcome.

Max Yon, who, like Moore for the Citadel, entered the 2014-15 campaign as the team's leading returning scorer, netted an Air Force-high 23 points in the defeat, adding in a single assist to go against four personal turnovers. Hayden Graham came off the bench to score 18 points with four rebounds and two blocked shots, while Kamryn Williams chipped in with 10 points but committed a team-high six turnovers. In all, the Falcons gave the ball away 18 times in the loss.

The Citadel played well against VMI in the first half of Friday's contest, but couldn't keep it together in the second frame with a very costly turnover that led to the game-clinching 3-pointer for the Keydets. The Bulldogs will need to score more than 65 if the team wants a shot against the Falcons, who connected on half of their shot attempts against a strong Army host team. Although playing for third place is less than glamorous in the AMC, an early season win is a win nonetheless.
