Air Force Falcons VS. New Mexico Lobos

New Mexico (14-7) at Air Force (9-12)

GAME NOTES: One of three teams tied for third place in the Mountain West Conference, the New Mexico Lobos try to keep pace with the clubs ahead of them as they clash with the Air Force Falcons at Clune Arena on Wednesday night.

The Lobos are coming off a 67-41 thrashing of San Jose State over the weekend, the second win in the last three outings for the program, which moved them to 6-3 in league play and into a tie with both Colorado State and Boise State in the standings. New Mexico is still one of only two teams in the country, the other being Cincinnati, that has yet to allow an opponent as many as 70 points.

As for the Falcons, they had a lot of success during the non-conference portion of the schedule, but since then has won just twice in 10 opportunities. Also in action last Saturday, Air Force was taken down by UNLV at the Thomas & Mack Center, 74-63, marking the team's sixth loss in the last seven outings and now the Academy sits all alone in 10th place in the MWC.

As far as the all-time series is concerned, the Lobos are ahead by a count of 56-19, having won all but four of 37 battles played in Albuquerque. Earlier this season, UNM captured a 60-48 win at home.

At WisePies Arena, the Lobos had little trouble with a San Jose State squad that has yet to defeat a single Division I foe this season, limiting the Spartans to a mere 25.0 percent shooting from the floor. Deshawn Delaney led the offense for the hosts with 15 points, shooting 3-of-4 behind the 3-point line, followed by Sam Logwood with 10 points. New Mexico crushed SJSU on the glass by a 44-24 margin, which made up for the fact that the host made good on a mere 12-of-22 at the free-throw line.

Although he failed to score in double figures the last time out, Hugh Greenwood remains the top scorer in conference play for the Lobos with 13.0 ppg. However, he tends to be hit-or-miss when it comes to his production since he relies so heavily on 3-point shooting. He is 40.0 percent accurate from beyond the arc, but just 38.9 percent from the field overall. Delaney accounts for 9.7 ppg as the team generates 63.2 ppg versus the rest of the Mountain West.

Continuing to operate without leading scorer Max Yon, who is out due to injury and personal matters, the Falcons simply could not keep up with UNLV on the road Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack. Justin Hammond scored 15 points and Marek Olesinski tacked on 11 and eight boards for the Air Force starters, while Matt Mooney produced 10 points off the bench for a squad that shot better on the perimeter (.455) than it did the field overall (.442), while turning the ball over 15 times.

The loss of Yon means the Falcons are without 16.5 ppg in conference action, not to mention another 11.0 ppg that Kamryn Williams, another injured player, could be bringing to the table. In their absence, Olesinski stands as the only double-digit performer with 11.3 ppg, to go along with 5.6 rpg. A threat on both the interior and the outside, Olesinski has made a team-best 19 3- pointers, hitting his attempts at a 42.2 percent clip, but still the loss of Yon and Williams means the team is being outscored by almost seven points per contest.

No longer one of the dominant teams in the MWC, the Lobos will have to scratch and claw for every win the rest of the way. In order to put themselves in a better position come tournament time, they will need to take care of business against weaker opponents such as the Falcons.

Predicted Outcome

New Mexico 68, Air Force 61
