Maxwell History

Maxwell was born on May 23rd, 1973, in Brooklyn, NY, where he grew up in relative obscurity. His musical career did not start until much later in life when he began to work on his debut album in the early 1990s. He had some help during this time from songwriter Leon Ware and guitarist Wah Wah Watson. The album was completed in 1994, but the record label did not feel it was right, so it was shelved for two years before its initial release.

In 1997, he recorded an episode of MTV Unplugged , where he covered songs by Kate Bush and Nine Inch Nails along with his own songs. There were issues brought up later on between the record label and Maxwell regarding this recording. The label wanted to release an entire album based on this and he disagreed. A compromise was reached and a seven track EP was released later that year.

His second album came out in 1998 and the following year a single he had recorded that was written by R. Kelly hit number one. The song, "Fortunate," was also featured on the soundtrack of the 1999 movie Life . In 2001, he released his third album Now and it was met with very favorable reception by fans and critics alike. It hit number one on both the Billboard Top 200 and the Billboard R&B charts that year along with giving him a hit single with "Lifetime."

After a hiatus of eight years, he released his next album entitled BLACKsummers'night in 2009. It reached #1 on the Billboard Albums Top 200 chart as soon as it was released. In 2010, he received six Grammy nominations but failed to win in any of the categories. His song "Pretty Wings" was released under his publishing name of "Musze" rather than under his own name and was nominated for "Song of the Year."
