San Diego Chargers History
The San Diego Chargers were started as one of the charter members of the AFL when it was being formulated in 1959 and 1960. The Chargers played their inaugural season in 1960 and had a few challenges as the team started out. However, three years later, they would win their first and only championship in 1963, beating the Boston Patriots soundly by a score 51-10.
After this championship season, the Chargers faithful would have to wait until the late 1970's before their squad became contenders for a championship again. This was in part because this time frame ushered in the "Air Coryell" years. Head coach Don Coryell built one of the most dynamic passing attacks in NFL history. Quarterback Dan Fouts and receivers, Kellen Winslow, John Jefferson, and Charlie Joiner, teamed up for one of the most explosive attacks that the NFL would ever see. These teams were largely competitive but they just never seemed to get over the hump of winning an AFC championship.
The Chargers made it to their only Super Bowl in 1994, lost to a very sound 49ers team. The Chargers would have to wait for the emergence of Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson in the 2000's before they became major contenders in the AFC again. While the current team has yet to win a Super Bowl, they are perennial contenders and offer their fans hope every season that hoisting the Lombardi trophy is something that will happen in the very near future.
