Kansas City Chiefs History
The organization that eventually became the Chiefs was actually started as a charter member of the AFL league as a Dallas franchise. Originally called the Dallas Texans, this organization would move to their current home in Kansas City in 1963. This came as a shock because the Texans had won their first AFL championship in 1962, but owner Lamar Hunt felt the move was necessary to generate fan support for the fledgling team.
Once settled in at Kansas City, legendary head coach Hank Stram helped this team win two more championships that included their first and only Super Bowl title that came in Super Bowl IV against the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings 23-7. Since the Hank Stram era, this organization fell on hard times until the hiring of a new head coach, Marty Schottenheimer in 1988.
Schottenheimer brought the Chiefs back to prominence as they would make the playoffs seven times under his reign as head coach. Unfortunately though, he developed astigmatism that branded him as being too conservative in the playoffs. The Chiefs would never make it to the Super Bowl under Marty Schottenheimer which led him to resign in 1998. Since then, a few coaches like Gunther Cunningham and Dick Vermeil have made attempts at getting this franchise back into contention but, like Marty, couldn't get the team over their playoff misfortunes.
Other Kansas City Teams
Kansas City, Missouri is the home of two pro teams in the major sports leagues in the United States. Beside the Chiefs, the Royals are the other professional team in town and they play their home games at Kaufmann Stadium. The Royals had their golden period at the beginning of the 1980's under players like George Brett. They won their first and only World Series title in 1985 when the defeated their intrastate rivals in the "I-70 Series," the St. Louis Cardinals.
Besides these two pro teams, Kansas City is also home to a wide variety of smaller market professional teams and minor league affiliate clubs. The T-Bones are a minor league baseball team that plays in the Northern League. The Missouri Mavericks are a CHL hockey club that play at the Sprint Center and share this venue with an Arena League football club called the Kansas City Brigade. Also, the most famous Negro League baseball team, the Monarchs was based here before the desegregation of the MLB.
