Billy Joel was not excited to start playing piano as a child but his father was a classical pianist and his parents insisted. He realized that Columbia University was no longer an option, so he made a move towards Columbia Records and was signed to a deal in 1973.

Billy Joel has played many concerts that have made history throughout his career, but the ones that stand out are the series of shows he played in Russia in 1987. Since the Berlin Wall was constructed, Joel was one of the first American artists to play a show in Russia. He played three dates in Leningrad and three in Moscow, recording a hit live album. The set list included most of his own hits, in addition to classic rock tunes "Back In The USSR" by The Beatles and the Bob Dylan classic "The Times They Are A'Changin."

After several years of personal turmoil, Billy Joel thought it may be time to throw in the towel. He played a show at Madison Square Garden on New Year's Eve 1999 that he swore would be his last. He dedicated four long hours to playing all of the hits. Eventually, the recording of the show was turned into a popular live album called 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert.

Much to the relief of music fans across the globe, The Millennium concert was not the last that Billy Joel played. He began touring with fellow piano man Elton John in a series called the Face To Face Tours, in which the two men co-headlined.
