Tool History

Tool was formed in 1990 in Los Angeles, California, by Paul D'Amour, Adam Jones, Maynard James Keenan, and Danny Carey. Each came to Los Angeles with different goals in mind and came together through a variety of mutual friends. Before the band was officially formed, both D'Amour and Jones wanted to break into the film industry and Keenan was working remodeling pet stores. Carey eventually joined the band by chance as many of the invited musicians never showed and he ended up sitting in.

The band played only a few gigs before they were being approached by multiple record labels. They eventually settled on and signed with Zoo Entertainment and released their first album in 1992. After the release, the band went on tour with Fishbone, Rollins Band, and Rage Against the Machine to great receptions wherever they played. The release of their next album, Undertow , the following year saw the band back out on tour and playing dates with the Lollapalooza festivals. At one gig the band's friend, comedian Bill Hicks, jokingly asked the audience of 60,000 people to stand up and help him look for a lost contact lens.

In September of 1995, D'Amour amicably parted ways with the band to pursue his own solo project and was replaced by Justin Chancellor. In 1996, the band released ?nima, which was dedicated to their long time friends Bill Hicks who had passed away two and a half years earlier. The band ended up in a legal dispute the same year with Volcano Entertainment over them looking at other record labels. The band countersued that there was no renewal clause in their current contract and the case was eventually settled out of court.

In 1998, they signed a new contract with Volcano for three albums and subsequently let their manager at the time go. From then until 2007, the band continued to record and releases three more albums and then went on a one-year hiatus. They returned to the studio in early 2009 and began working on their next album, which is due out sometime in 2011. There will be a follow up tour once the album has been released in New Zealand and in the United States.
