Keith Lionel Urban was born in New Zealand originally but his family relocated to Australia, where he was raised. He began his musical aspirations at a very young age and was winning singing contests by the time he reached eight. He performed at many of the local venues available until he finally was able to score a record deal with EMI in Australia. His first solo album had a total of four number one hits in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany.

In 1992, he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked as a session guitarist for acts like Brook & Dunn and Alan Jackson. While in Nashville, Keith became addicted to cocaine use and in 1998 he checked into a rehab clinic. Once he was clean and released, he got right back on the horse and released his self titled debut album which quickly rose up the charts. Along with three top five hits from the album, he won the Top Male Vocalist award in 2001 from the Academy of Country Music.

He has released a total of eight studio albums, which garnered him eleven number one songs. His tours have included some of the biggest names in country music today, such as Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, and Taylor Swift. His notoriety as a guitar player has seen him accompany artists like Garth Brooks on some of their biggest hits. He has always taken a unique approach when touring and reaching out to his fans.

When Getting Closer was released, he not only had the regular tour set up but put on two impromptu concerts, one at Penn Station in New York and one in a Philadelphia train station. He is married to actress Nicole Kidman who he met on the set of G'Day America which was a special edition of Good Morning America dedicated solely to Australian artists and performers.
