Jill Scott History and Facts

Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised by her mother and grandmother, both of which she remains close to until this day. Her early life and education saw her gearing towards a career in teaching but after spending a period of time as a teacher's aide, she became disillusioned with the teaching profession and subsequently dropped out of school at Temple University. During this time, she worked a variety of jobs that included an ice cream parlor and construction.

Unlike many other artists that start their stage career out with singing, she began hers as a spoken word artist. She was seen performing poetry that she had written at local venues that catered to poets. At this time, she was brought to the attention of Amir "?uestlove" Thompson of The Roots. Thompson saw potential in her words and invited her to join the band in their studio. This lead to her co-writing "You Got Me," which went on to win a Grammy award in 2000, when Eryka Badu and Roots performed the song along with getting her a spot in The Roots live show.

Her debut album was released in 2000 and it was met with some success as the single "A Long Walk" was nominated for a Grammy in 2003. Even though Scott lost that award, she did go on to win the 2005 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance for "Cross My Mind." For the next nine years, she continued to not only write poetry but also record more albums. Her songs had gotten quite a bit of airplay over the years and many clips from them have been sampled on other projects.

In 2011, she will be releasing her newest album entitled The Light of the Sun , along with her former label releasing a compilation album of her work. Aside from her singing and spoken word performances, she has also done some acting. Her acting credits include guest spots on Girlfriends, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and in the Lifetime movie Sins of the Mother , just to name a few.
