The Washington Wizards are an American basketball team that competes in the National Basketball Association (NBA). They are based in the Nation's Capital - Washington, D.C. The team now known as the Wizards originally started out as the Chicago Packers in the 1961-62 season. The following year, they changed their name to the Chicago Zephyrs. In 1963, the club relocated to Baltimore, Maryland and became the Baltimore Bullets.

It was not until 1973 that the team associated itself with the capital city - they moved to Landover, Maryland and became the Capital Bullets. The following year, they changed their name yet again to the Washington Bullets. Finally, in May 1997, the team became the Washington Wizards because the name "Bullets" had violent overtones that made the owner uncomfortable over the years, especially considering the high murder rate in Washington, D.C.

Despite the numerous name changes over the years, one thing has remained constant - their draft picks and trading decisions set them up with enough talent to take on their competitors season after season. Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, came out of retirement to play for the Washington Wizards in September 2001. In the years he played for the Wizards, he helped them win many more games than in previous years, cementing his basketball legacy even in his late 30's. Even though Jordan does not play for the Wizards anymore, the club still has star players like John Wall to help them kick off their 2010 season.
