Phoenix Suns History

The Phoenix Suns belong to the Pacific Division which is in the NBA's Western Conference. The team plays in the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona. The team jerseys are purple, orange, and white. Their first season was in 1968.

In their debut season, the Suns were part of an extension along with the Bucks. At the end of the season, they had a 16-66 record and were involved in a coin-toss with the Bucks to settle on who would have the top choice in the 1969 draft. Losing the coin-toss, they ended up with center Neal Walk. They won a different coin-toss in the same year, gaining star player Connie Hawkins.

The Suns made the playoffs in their second playing season, with a lineup of stars including Connie Hawkis, Paul Silas, Dick Van Arsdale, and Gail Goodrich. They entered the NBA Finals for the first time in 1976, but they lost the game to the Boston Celtics. Forward Charles Barkley led the team to the NBA finals again in 1993.

During the late '70's and early '80's, the Suns experienced five great seasons. In the '83-'84 season, featured players Maurice Lucas and Walter Davis helped the team to the playoffs. However, they lost to the Lakers.

The team gained Charles Barkley from the 76ers in 1992, which helped the team to sixty-two in-season victories and achieved the title of MVP. They made it to the finals that year, but could not defeat the Chicago Bulls. Barkley was traded to the Houston Rockets at the end of the 1996 season.

Since the team was founded, they have had nineteen fifty-win seasons and made nine trips to the Western Conference Finals. In their history, the team has retired four former members to the National Basketball Hall of Fame. Their all-time team records are largely taken by Alvan Adams, who holds the record for most games played, most minutes played, most rebounds, and most steals as well as most turnovers and most personal fouls. As of 2010, the team is coached by Alvin Gentry.
