No Doubt History

No Doubt was formed as a collaborative effort by John Spence and Eric Stefani in 1986. The band started out by practicing in the garage of Stefani's parent's home. Members included Eric on keyboards, Gwen Stefani singing backing vocals and John Spence singing lead vocals, Jerry McMahon on guitar, Chris Leal on bass, Gabe Gonzales and Alan Meade on the trumpet and Tony Meade on saxophone.

In December of 1987, the band faced tragedy just before a show where record producers were going to look scout them. John Spence committed suicide only days before the show was supposed to occur, which caused the band to temporarily break up. After a few weeks, they decided to give it another try and put Alan Meade on lead vocals. Meade left the band shortly after this and the band moved Gwen into the lead singer's position.

Their live following in California was developing at this time and it drew the attention of Tony Ferguson of Interscope Records. He signed the band to a multi-record deal in 1990, but the first album was not released until 1992. During this period, much of the musical attraction was coming out of Seattle from the "grunge" movement. This caused the band's first album to fall well short of expectations and it only sold 30,000 copies after its initial release.

The 1995 release of Tragic Kingdom propelled the band into the mainstream of music. The album was very well received along with boosting sales of their first album tremendously. Their tour to support the album release ended up running for a full 27 months and went international. When the album was released, Interscope Records and Trauma engaged in a battle of the recording contract of No Doubt.

Trauma sued for $100 million for fraud, breach of contract, and extortion and wanted the joint venture to be nullified. The company claimed that once No Doubt soared to unexpected levels of success, Interscope reneged on its contract. This was settled out of court for a reported three million dollars.
