KISS History

KISS was formed by Gene Simmons, "Ace" Frehley, Peter Criss and Paul Stanley in 1973 as the brain child of Simmons and Stanley. The KISS logo was a controversial one in that the two" S"s that were at the end were designed to look like the Nazi style lightning bolts. Album sales in Germany, where displaying the symbol is illegal, were maintained by doing a second version of the logo with altered characters at the end. The band's name has also been one that was debated for a long time as to its meaning.

The name "KISS" is actually derived from a conversation between Stanley, Criss, and Simmons as they were driving. There was a band that Criss had been a member of called "Lips" and rather than reuse that name, Stanley suggested "Kiss" as an alternative. Some of the acronyms that have been bandied about over the years include "Kids In Satan's Service" and "Knights in Satan's Service." Their first live performance as a band was done in Queens, New York to an audience of three in 1973.

The band's first tour was in 1974 after recordingKISSand initially the public did not take to the band as was reflected in their sales which show only 75,000 copies sold. They actually stopped in the middle of the tour in order to record their second album once the tour had reached Los Angeles. They released Hotter Than Hell and resumed touring only to be stopped completely by the record company. While their album sales dwindled and the record company was losing money, their reputation soared as to their live stage show and their fan base started to grow.

Over the years, the band has become one of the most prolific bands in rock music history. Their stage shows are second to none in theatrics but not without some risks. At one point, Gene Simmons had actually set his own hair on fire accidentally doing his fire breathing trick. They continue to record new albums and tour to this day as one of the most loved heavy metal/glam rock bands in history.
