Dave Matthews Band History

The Dave Matthews Band, or DMB as they are called by their fans, was formed in 1990 in Charlottesville, Virginia. While working as a bartender, the then shy Dave Matthews was talked into cutting a demo of four of his songs in order to get interest from other musicians to accompany him. They originally started out with only three members but found that the limited instrumentals simply did not create the desired sound of the band.

Over the next year, they practiced together and continued to add the musicians they felt were needed to get the most of what they had written. In 1991, they recorded their first demo tape done in a studio as a complete band. At the time they went to play their first show, they had yet to choose a name for the band. It was by pure accident and a single phone call that the band received the name they carry to this day.

The band was asked to perform at the Charlottesville Earth Day Festival in 1991 and before arriving, they were finalizing the details with the event personnel. The individual on the phone was asked what name to put down on the flyer and promo pieces and was told to simply put "Dave Matthews." Instead of putting the name alone down, the individual on the other end of the line added the word "band" to the end and it has stuck since then.

Over the years, they have released seven studio albums and 16 live albums from each of their tours. Their live concerts are well known for the extended versions of their songs with a lot of improvisation thrown into the mix. They also travel with an extensive light and video show to accent their performances. They continue to support many different charities, such as their own BAMA Works Project, which aids people with difficulties in their hometown of Charlottesville and surrounding areas.
