Dallas Stars History

The Dallas Stars began their time in the league during the NHL expansion of 1967. Originally called the North Stars, the team headquartered in Minnesota, and got off to a bit of a rough start. This type of start for the new teams in the league was fairly commonplace in that they were only so many players to go around. As the fan base fell away, the franchise faced a decision. They could either fold or they could merge with another existing franchise, which is the direction they chose. The team's merger with the Cleveland Barons proved to be the correct choice as it strengthened the entire roster.

Over the next few years, things improved for the North Stars as they began to win on a regular basis and build their fan base. The owners were not happy with the team's location and contemplated a move, with Anaheim and San Jose being at the top of their list. Circumstances led them, however, to consider Dallas as the team's new home when the Dallas Cowboy's Roger Staubach approached the owners and pitched the city to them. His words had an obvious impact on the owners and the deal was all but done. This led the team to shorten their name to simply the Stars and their loyal fans in Minnesota waited for the fateful day when they would depart.

Dallas, TX, became the Stars official home in 1993. In addition to the move, the team began recruiting stronger players and they began to move up in the ranks of the Western Conference. It took them six more years and a few roster changes before finally bringing the Stanley Cup to Dallas in 1999. The following season would see the Stars get all the way back to the playoffs but a back-to-back win simply did not happen. The New Jersey Devils proved to be a bit too much for the Stars and they were beaten in a six game series.
