Calgary Flames History

The Flames franchise was formed in 1972 and was based in Atlanta, Georgia, which was not known as a "hockey town." The NHL at the time was attempting to bring some balance to the league itself and bring hockey to an area, which was gaining some popularity for the sport in part due to the World Hockey Association. Over the next eight years, the team was not well received by local sports fans as was hoped and the decision was made to relocate them to Calgary in 1980.

Once in Calgary, the team began to receive the attention they deserved which proved the move there was the correct one. The local sports fans had always wanted their own representatives in the NHL and showed their support game after game. The team did its part by giving the fans some of the best hockey action they had seen in a long time along with taking the Western Conference title in 1986 and making it all the way to the Stanley Cup finals.

The Flames, while playing their best in the finals, could not quite overcome their rivals but would go on to repeat the same feat in 1989. In 1989, they were able to yet again take the Western conference title but did not finish the season out as strong as they did in 1986. This defeat strengthened their resolve to see the Montreal Canadiens again in what can only be described as a "grudge match." The series lasted for six games and the Flames emerged victorious, winning the Stanley Cup for the very first time in franchise history.
