Tampa Bay Lightning History
St. Petersburg and Tampa both were vying for control of the expansion team that the NHL was granting the Florida Bay area in the early 1990's. Former NHL greats, Phil and Tony Esposito were the chief orchestrators of the franchise and were awarded the team that would be named the Lightning. The Lightning were fairly decent in their first two seasons before the lockout year in 1995. They would make their first run in the playoffs in 1996 as they were armed with players like Chris Kontos, Chris Gratton, and Brian Bradley.
However, following early success, the team would lose most of its star talent to free agency. The organizations reputation was further tarnished by the IRS liens and bankruptcy rumors. In 1999, the team was sold for a third time. It was at this time that the team also acquired a minor league hockey team. Players under this new regime, at both the professional and minor league levels, would go on to revitalize this club and bring them back to respectability.
The pinnacle season for the Lightning came in 2004 when they beat the Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference championships. Players like Martin St.Louis and Vincent Lecavalier got the Lighting to the Stanley Cup eleven years after the team was formed. These two dynamic players helped the Lightning win the Stanley Cup that year by defeating the Calgary Flames in a dramatic seven game series.
Other Tampa Bay Teams
Tampa Bay plays host to all major sports except the NBA. In addition to the Lightning, the Rays and the Buccaneers both call this city home. The Buccaneers were thought to be one of the worst teams in NFL history until they captured their first Super Bowl in 2003. However, the team was dismantled and since has slid to the bottom of the NFC South Division.
Tampa Bay is also host to one of the youngest and best baseball teams in both the age of their franchise and their players. The Tampa Bay Rays have been in the playoff picture of the MLB for the past three seasons and have won the AL East for the second time in franchise history in 2010. Evan Longoria, David Price, and Carl Crawford each helped anchor the team in 2010.
