One of the most infamous stories regarding her awards happened in 2009 at the MTV Video Music Awards show. While on stage to receive her video award, which was the first ever to be given out for country music, rapper Kanye West came on stage and removed the microphone from Taylor's hand. He then proceeded to say that Beyonce's video nominated for the same category was "one of the best videos of all time," which caused her to be too upset to continue her acceptance speech.

While he publicly apologized for this later, he was berated by artists from all genres of music and even the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in an "off the record" comment. This did not deter her from going back up on stage when called up by Beyonce herself in order to finish her acceptance speech. He went so far as to contact her personally afterwards and apologize for his actions, which she accepted gracefully.
