San Jose History

The Gund family had been trying to get hockey back to San Francisco Bay area since the Golden Seals were moved in 1976. When the North Stars were about to be moved, the NHL made a deal that would ship half of the North Stars players to the newly awarded franchise in San Jose. In return, the Stars were allowed to draft in the expansion draft held for the Sharks franchise. The two teams were set up in their perspective cities and Pat Falloon was chosen as the Sharks first player.

In 1991, the Sharks started their inaugural season at the Cow Palace in San Jose. The team consisted mostly of journeymen that were on the downside of their NHL careers. They would have moderate success during their first two seasons with players like Arturs Irbe and Rob Gaudreau. In 1993, they moved into their current arena and won their first playoff series against the Red Wings. The Sharks would have up and down years in the 1990's, but would draft Patrick Marleau in 1997.

In the 2000's, the Sharks truly came into their own and have become one of the better teams in the Western Conference. Though they have never won this conference to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals, they have won the division five times between 2002 and 2010. They have accomplished this by building a young team built around the Marleau line. The team has been building for years and should finally be able to make a legitimate run at the Stanley Cup.

While San Jose only hosts the one major professional team in the Sharks, who play in the NHL, the city does have a rich minor league and smaller market professional teams located here. One of these teams is the San Jose Earthquakes, who play in the Major League Soccer. They call the Buck Shaw Stadium home and compete in the Western Conference of this pro soccer league.

Another team that calls this city home is the Real San Jose. This team is another soccer club that is the newest sports franchise to be awarded to San Jose. They play in the National Premier Soccer League at Yerba Buena High School. Finally, a minor league baseball team, the San Jose Giants, also play here and they are a member of the California League. They play their home games at San Jose Municipal Stadium and are affiliated with the San Francisco Giants.
