San Antonio Spurs History

The San Antonio Spurs are based out of San Antonio, Texas. They play in the Western Conference of the Southwest Division of the NBA and were founded 1967. They joined the NBA in 1976. The team was originally the Dallas Chaparrals from 1967 to 1970, then briefly the Texas Chaparrals from 1970 to 1971, then went back to Dallas until 1973. They moved to San Antonio in 1973 and have been there since. They play at the AT&T Center in San Antonio and wear jerseys of black, silver, and white. The team is one of four American Basketball Association teams to remain intact after the 1976 ABA-NBA merger, and is the only of these teams to have won an NBA championship.

The team joined the NBA after the 1976 merger. They made the playoffs in their first season and their second and third seasons brought them the Central Division title. Much of this success can be credited to star player George Gervin, also known as "The Iceman." In their third NBA season, 1978-79, the Spurs made it to the conference finals, but lost to the Washington Bullets.

In 1987, the team received David Robinson from the draft, who made an immediate difference - the spurs had five 50 win seasons in the early '90's. In the 1993-94 season, Robinson and forward Dennis Rodman became the first set of players to lead the league in scoring and rebounding. The team advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time in 1999, led by David Robinson and Tim Duncan. They went on to defeat the Knicks for the title.

In their 33 seasons playing for the NBA, the Spurs have achieved 17 division titles. They have advanced to the postseason in 19 of the last 20 seasons and have not missed the playoffs since Tim Duncan joined the team in 1997. They are now coached by Gregg Popovich and owned by Peter Holt.
