Portland Trail Blazers History

The Trail Blazers are based out of Portland, Oregon and act as one of the teams in the Western Conference's Pacific Division in the NBA. They initially held their events at the Memorial Coliseum prior to transferring to the Rose Garden Arena during 1995. They entered the NBA in '70 and are the sole major league team in Oregon. They wear team jerseys of red, black, silver and white.

The Trail Blazers entered the league during a league extension along with the Buffalo Braves and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The fundamental team starred guard Geoff Petrie and forward LeRoy Ellis, and their first season produced a win-loss of 29-53. They placed toward the lower-end of the league in the subsequent three seasons.

The team captured the league title for the first time in the 1976-77 season, only six years after joining the NBA. They were fronted by center Bill Walton and forward Maurice Lucas and it was the first year the team was coached by Jack Ramsay. The next season, they registered a 58-24 win-loss record and Walton succeeded in obtaining the league's MVP award. Shortly after, though, he was weighed down by injuries and missed the entire next season before switching to the Clippers.

The team became one of the NBA's best in the beginning of the '90's with the help of Clyde Drexler, Terry Porter, and Buck Williams. They advanced to the finals in 1990, but succumbed to the Detroit Pistons. The season after, the team tallied 63 wins and made it to the Western Conference Finals. Drexler was traded to the Houston Rockets in 1995, when the team gained Arvydas Sabonis. In the '99-'00 season, they gained Scottie Pippen, who is considered to be one of the NBA's best players ever.

Since their founding, the team has advanced to the NBA finals three times, winning the title once in '77. They have qualified for the playoffs a total of 26 seasons, including a streak of 21 seasons straight. Five members of the Hall of Fame are former players of the Trail Blazers. The team is now coached by Nate McMillan.
