Memphis Grizzlies History

The Grizzlies organization was first founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1995 because the NBA was trying to move teams into Canada. Like most expansion teams, the Grizzlies did not fare that well in their first years due to the inexperience of players, coaches, and the front office. Despite getting marquee players from the draft like Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Mike Bibby, the Grizzlies could never seem to put it all together. This prompted them to move from Vancouver to Memphis for the 2001 season.

In 2001, the Grizzlies organization beat out the Charlotte Hornets for the right to move to Memphis, Tennessee. Once in place, the Grizzlies got their first leg up by trading for eventual rookie of the year, Pau Gasol. They also grabbed a star from Duke named Shane Battier in the draft in 2001 to help round out their lineup. They also helped their roster by getting James Posey and Mike Miller on the team.

By 2002, the Grizzlies were finally starting to play better thanks to the strong nucleus of players they had been getting through free agency, trades, and high lottery draft picks. While their lineup looked like a carousel for star players to get on and off, the team made the playoffs for three straight years starting in 2002. Since 2005, the Grizzlies have been under the radar screen in the Western Conference. However, they are beginning to put the pieces together to go on their first championship run.
