Atlanta Hawks History

The Atlanta Hawks are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA but have not always been based out of their current host city. This club was founded in Buffalo and moved to Illinois in the middle of their first season. While playing under the name the Blackhawks in Illinois, this franchise won its only NBA championship in 1958. Since, they have been close a few times but could never get back to the championship plateau.

After this championship season, the Blackhawks would steadily dip back down the standings causing fewer and fewer people to come out to their games. This lack of attendance again made the franchise look for a new home and they moved to Atlanta in 1968. After the move, they dropped the "Black" part from their name as a way to start a new beginning in their new host city.

Once settled in their new city, Ted Turner, the local owner of other sports teams like the Braves, helped build the franchise by drafting players like Dominique Wilkins and Pau Gasol. During Turner's ownership, the Hawks managed to win four division titles but have ultimately failed to win their second championship. However, they have won their division a total of four times since the move - in 1970, 1980, 1987, and 1994.
