St. Louis Rams History

The Rams are one of the older organizations in the National Football League because they were founded in 1936. This team was originally based out of Cleveland, Ohio and was set up to be a cross town rival of the Browns. They would remain in this city until 1945 when they won their first NFL championship. They would move to the west coast and be based out of Los Angeles where they would located until 1993.

While in Los Angeles, the Rams gave birth to one of the best defensive lines in the history of the NFL. This line was anchored by Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones, who was responsible for the creating the term "sack." The "Fearsome Foursome" defensive line aided the Rams in being a dominant team in the 1960's and early 70's but could never get them a championship. Though this team would be competitive over the years, they would be moved one more time to St. Louis.

Once in St. Louis, the Rams fell on hard times until they hired head coach Dick Vermeil. Vermeil set up one of the greatest offensive teams in the history of the NFL called "the Greatest Show on Turf." This team featured Marshal Faulk as a multi-dimensional running back and won this organizations first Super Bowl in 1999. This Super Bowl victory was won in dramatic fashion that featured a last second stop by the Rams to win the Championship.

The Rams are just a taste of the three professional teams that call St. Louis home. One of the other teams situated in this town are the St. Louis Blues. The Blues are a National Hockey League team that was brought into the league when they expanded by six teams in 1967.

The other team that is based here are the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards play in Busch Stadium, which is one of the oldest fields still in use in the National League. Also, the Cardinals have won the most World Series rings of any National League team since the Series started in 1903. Only the New York Yankees have won more titles than the Cardinals.
