Miami Dolphins History

The Dolphins organization was started 1966 as an expansion team to the AFL Football League which was gaining strength as an opposition to the traditional NFL. The Dolphins made great moves in their early franchise by picking up head coach Don Shula, a championship winning coach formerly of the Baltimore Colts. Shula would waste no time setting up this franchise in the mold of his former championship Colts, as this team would become one of the AFL expansion team to win championships.

The Dolphins never won an AFL Championship because they were added the year before the Super Bowls started. However, Shula and the front office did add players like Bob Griese, Larry Csonka, and the "No Name" defense that would yield large dividends once the merger took place in 1970. The Dolphins became the first team to go completely undefeated in 1972 winning their first Super Bowl. The next year they would repeat becoming the first AFL team as the repeat winner of the Super Bowl.

After the early 1970's, the Dolphins always remained relevant in the AFC East as Shula was tenured for 26 years with this organization. In 1983, they would get back to the Super Bowl thanks to rookie sensation quarterback, Dan Marino. Marino would go on to have a stellar career for the Dolphins but fail to get them a Super Bowl title. He set the mark for most passing records in the NFL but never was able to win the big game. Marino later retired following the 1999 season and the Dolphins went into a rebuilding phase.

Other Miami Teams

Besides the Dolphins, there are two other professional sports teams that call Miami, Florida home. One of these teams, that have been largely successful in the past decade, is the Miami Heat. The Heat is an NBA team that plays at the American Airlines Arena in this city and won their first NBA championship a few years ago in 2006 against the Dallas Mavericks. Lately this team has expanded their super star potential by retaining Dwayne Wade and signing LeBron James.

While Heat have been a crowd pleaser, the Marlins are the other team that plays in this town and they share their home stadium, Sun Life Stadium, with the Miami Dolphins. The Florida Marlins are one of the best expansion teams in Major League Baseball history because they have already won two World Series titles in 1997 and 2003.
