Colorado Avalanche History
Originally known as the Nordiques, the Colorado Avalanche began playing in 1972 out of Quebec, Canada. The WHA, or World Hockey Association, was in full swing at the time but did not quite meet the expectations of the fans. In 1979, the NHL absorbed the teams of the WHA and even with this change, the team struggled. The team continued to play regularly but could simply not gain the momentum to get them to the championship. As result of this, they maintained a very low standing in the league and fans soon turned their backs on the franchise.
There was help on the horizon for the struggling franchise but not in the way that many people would have thought. Eric Lindros, a player for whom the Nordiques owned the rights to, had never been quiet about how he felt regarding playing for the team. Philadelphia saw a way to improve their team's roster and made a five player trade with the Nordiques that would turn the tide for the struggling team. Included in this deal was Peter Forsberg and his addition to the Nordiques would prove to be one of the best trades the tem had ever made. Lindros' career was plagued with injuries and his time with Philadelphia would never see the team reach another Stanley Cup championship, Forsberg, on the other hand, became one of the most formidable players of his time.
The Nordiques still struggled, however, in getting and maintaining a loyal fan base. In 1995, the team's owners decided it was time for a change and relocated the franchise to Denver, Colorado. The move proved to be the best thing to happen to the team since its inception. As the Nordiques, the team struggled incessantly and as the Avalanche, a loss was a rare occasion. The Avalanche reached the playoffs multiple times over the next few year. In 1996 and again in 2001 the team took home the championship with Forsberg at the helm.
