Phish History

Phish was formed in 1983 at the University of Vermont by Trey Anastasio, Jeff Holdsworth, Jon Fishman, and Mike Gordon. After a few years, the band switched out a few members and ended up with Trey, Mike, Page (Page McConnell) and Fishman in 1986 and remains the band's lineup to this day. There was a push at one point to create a slot for the "fifth member' of the band referring to their lighting director, Chris Kuroda, as he would "play" along to the music with the lighting effects and create a unique visual show along with the band. This attempt by fans was unsuccessful though he remains an integral part of every show.

The band's first few albums were self-produced on cassette tape in a dorm room at Goddard College in Vermont, one of which was The White Tape , which was rereleased again to the public in 1998. They continued to build a following over the next few years to the point where they were playing to only sold out gigs. At one point, a club owner in Boston refused to hire them to play because he had never heard of them, so they rented the entire club for the night and played to a sold out show of fans that followed the band. The band was likened to the Grateful Dead in the style they performed and the type of jam sessions they used to create their albums.

Their shows began to become more of a participation event for the fans rather than just them as an audience. The band would play musical cues and the audience would react to them. One example was in playing a riff from the theme to the television show The Simpsons and the audience would shout out Homer Simpson's catch phrase of D'oh! Another is the "Big Ball Jam" where the audiences would hit around a beach ball and each time the ball was hit, the band would play a different note, effectively including them in creating a new song.

Phish is one of the most unique bands on tour today, not to mention one of the most innovative. They are constantly changing their shows and styles to create a unique experience for their audience. They have recorded 23 albums, nine of which have gone gold and two of which have gone platinum. Their music videos have also received gold and platinum certifications.
