New York Islanders History

In 1972, the NHL hurriedly set up two new franchises to block teams from joining the upstart WHA league. One of these two teams was placed on Long Island in New York adjacent to New York City and was dubbed the Islanders. It took the Islanders a few years to get rolling, but eventually this team would begin to dominate the league.

Being a part of one of the biggest franchise turnarounds in NHL history, players like Clark Gillies and Denis Potvin aided the Islanders in getting into the playoffs for the first time in 1975. They would become a perennial contender in the East but would not make it to the Eastern Conference Finals until 1978. With the help of rookie Mike Bossy, the team would repeat as Eastern Conference champs in 1979 but would again fail to win the Cup.

It was at the outset of the next decade in 1980 that the Islanders won their first Stanley Cup. They would go on to win the Cup in four straight seasons between 1980 and 1983 with a team that was built up over the 1970's. They were the first expansion team to ever be a dynasty as far as winning championships in the NHL and are regarded as one of the better teams to ever be put on the ice in NHL history. The Islanders are in fact the most successful expansion team to date in the NHL, winning one more Championship than nearby Atlantic division rival, the New Jersey Devils.
