San Francisco Giants History

The San Francisco Giants organization was founded in 1883 in New York and they were originally called the Gothams. They eventually changed their name to the Giants and were the second official team in the National League. An interesting fact about this club is that they have won more games than any other Major League franchise, even more than the New York Yankees.

During their time in New York, the Giants racked up five World Series titles and seventeen National League Pennants. While they were in New York, their major rivals were the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Yankees. However, due to low attendance and an aging stadium, the Giants organization decided to move out west with the Dodgers in 1958.

They took their great players with them and Willie Mays quickly became their iconic player during the early period in San Francisco. After the Say Hey Kid was through with his career the next mega star for this organization was Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds is famous for being the best power hitter of the last generation of ball players because he took Hank Aaron's career home run record.

Other San Francisco Teams

The San Francisco 49ers are the only other pro sports team associated with the city of San Francisco. They are a member of the National Football League and play their home games in Candlestick Park. This stadium has been the site of past greatness as the 49ers were a power house team during the 1980's and 1990's. Legendary coach Bill Walsh created the West Coast offense during this dynastic period which led the 49ers to four Super Bowl victories.

Besides the Giants and the 49ers, there aren't any other sports teams located here but there are some teams located in driving distance of San Francisco. Across the San Francisco Bay, the city of Oakland has posed as the major rival of San Francisco teams although they are in different leagues and conferences. Traveling down the coast a ways and San Franciscans can watch NHL hockey by attending San Jose Sharks game.
