Cleveland Cavaliers History
Cavaliers' basketball was founded as an expansion to the NBA in 1970 in the city of Cleveland. They picked up a winning streak rather quickly as compared to other expansion franchises in professional sports. In fact, they made their first playoff games in 1975 while they were armed with players like Bingo Smith, Jim Cleamons, and head coach Bill Fitch. They made it to the Eastern Conference finals that season, but did make it to the playoffs in the next two seasons.
The Cavaliers finally returned to the playoffs in 1985 under head coach George Karl. They would go on to overhaul the team by drafting players like Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, and Ron Harper. With this arsenal of players, they made the playoffs eight of the next nine seasons. This was the high water mark for the franchise up until this point, but they had yet to win an NBA title.
After the struggles of the mid 1990's and early 2000's, the franchise was reborn when they selected LeBron James in 2004. This emerging high school star went on to lead the Cavaliers back to the playoffs and helped them land their first appearance in NBA finals in 2007. However, they lost to the Spurs in a sweep that series. This honeymoon ended when LeBron left town in 2010 for Miami, and he has become vilified to the Cleveland faithful.
Other Cleveland Teams
Cleveland, Ohio is a rich sports town in the United States because it has representation in almost every major professional sport league. The one exception is the NHL, since Ohio's hockey team plays out of Columbus. Besides the Cavaliers, Cleveland hosts the Indians and the Browns. The Indians are an MLB team in that play in the American League Central division and have fallen on hard times over the past few years. However, they do have one of the best young centerfielders in baseball: Grady Sizemore.
The Cleveland Browns are one of the most storied franchises in NFL history. They have won championships before the merger, but could never manage to win a Super Bowl. However, their rich history comes from the years when Jim Brown set rushing records for the NFL. They were a successful team during the 1980's under quarterback Bernie Kosar, but the Browns never managed to edge out the Broncos or the Bills in the playoffs.
