Cincinnati Bengals History
The Cincinnati Bengals almost didn't land in Cincinnati. This organization headed by Paul Brown, the teams original owner, wanted a football franchise but didn't originally wanted to be attached to the NFL rather than the AFL. However, because it was a well known fact that the merger was going to happen in 1970, Brown decided to found his team in AFL.
The Bengals did not exactly set the football world on fire after their inception, but they did make the playoffs three times in the first decade after the merger. However, they would be doomed to be a second tier team in the AFC until they made their first Super Bowl in 1981. Their second Super Bowl trip happened in 1988 but unfortunately, they lost both of these games to the San Francisco 49ers.
Since the 1980's Super Bowl runs, the Bengals slid back down the standings until 2005 when their rebuilt team won their division for the first time in fifteen years. This rebuilt juggernaut of a team was centered around Carson Palmer at quarterback. Unfortunately, Palmer was seriously injured in the opening quarter of the Wild Card round which enabled the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the game and ultimately win the Super Bowl.
Other Cincinnati Teams
The Bengals and the Reds are the two pro teams that call Cincinnati, Ohio home. While it is true that the Bengals have struggled over the years, the Reds have had many great years atop of the baseball world. They are the oldest team still playing in the United States and their pinnacle years occurred in the early 1970's with players like Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, and Joe Morgan. They moved into their new stadium, the Great American Ballpark, in 2003.
After the Bengals and the Reds, the other teams located in this city play at the collegiate level. All college sporting events are fun and interesting to attend but NCAA football and basketball are by far the two biggest college sports attractions in Cincinnati. Xavier University is one of the colleges in Cincinnati that plays basketball extremely well. The University of Cincinnati has also recently begun to make a name for the college's football program reaching a BCS Bowl Game in 2009 season.
