Black Eyed Peas History and Facts
The Black Eyed Peas began in 1988, when eighth-graders William Adams (will.i.am) and Allan Pineda (apl.de.ap) met and began rapping and performing together around Los Angeles. The pair signed to Ruthless Records in 1992 and caught the attention of manager, Jerry Heller's nephew. Along with another friend of theirs, Dante Santiago, they called their trio Atban Klann (ATBAN: A Tribe Beyond a Nation). In 1995, they reformed the band and changed the name to "The Black Eyed Peas" after trying out "The Black Eyed Pods" for a time.
Their debut album, Behind the Front, was released in 1998 and was well received by both critics and fans. In 2001, they released their third album and added a new voice to their group, Fergie, even though they originally approached Nicole Scherzinger from Eden's Crush, but she was under contract with that band and could not join the Peas. From Elephunk, their third album came "Where Is the Love?," which became The Black Eyed Peas' first major hit, topping out at #8 on the U.S. Hot 100, but hitting number one in several other countries. This included seven weeks at #1 in the United Kingdom, where it became the biggest-selling single of 2003.
From 2004 to 2007, The Black Eyed Peas release their fourth album and then went on tour with Gwen Stefani. The tour took them all over the world and gave them even more exposure in the music arena. In 2007, The Black Eyed Peas launched the Black Blue & You World Tour, traveling to over twenty countries. Pepsi was a major sponsor of this tour, using it to promote the "Pepsi More" advertising campaign. For their part, the Black Eyed Peas wrote a single, "One Tribe," specifically for a Pepsi commercial.
In 200, the band released their next album entitled The E.N.D. where the E.N.D. stands for "Energy Never Dies." The first single released from the album, "Boom Boom Pow" went to number one in the U.S. and sold 465,000 copies on digital download. This would be the Black Eyed Peas first number one hit in the United States, where it held that honor for twelve weeks. In addition, it hit the top spot on the charts in three other countries.
