Born in 1960 in Oak Park, Illinois, Kathleen Mary Griffin was the youngest of five children to a first generation Irish-American couple. In her early years, she discovered her need to talk to people to the point where it was almost incessant. She became immersed in musical theatre in high school and performed in plays there including a production of Fiddler on the Roof . At a very young age, she convinced her parents to relocate with her to Los Angeles, California so she could become famous.

At 19, she attended at an improvisational group's show known as The Groundlings . This was when she realized that comedy was where she wanted to steer her career direction. She actually had the opportunity at the time to speak to Phil Hartman backstage at the show to gain some more insight into how to go about this. In the early 1980s, she became a member of the group and performed in and around Los Angeles with them along with performing standup as a solo act.

Over the following years, she appeared in many different roles as a guest on shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The X Files and Civil Wars . Her first mainstream exposure to the world came after she had her own half hour special on the HBO. She was then cast opposite Brooke Shields in the sitcom Suddenly Susan as the wisecracking Vicki. Her particular brand of humor has gotten her in hot water more often times than not. She has a tendency to make jokes that not everyone finds funny which, lead her to open her own television production company called aptly enough, "Inappropriate Laughter."

Controversy is something she is quite familiar with and she seems to shine in it. She has supposedly been banned from appearing t places due to inappropriate comments such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View and the Apollo Theater in New York. She at one time was actually a guest host on The View but was subsequently let go due to a comment she made regarding Barbara Walters.
