Jeff Dunham was born in Dallas, Texas in 1962 and raised as an only child where he started learning ventriloquism at the age of eight. His parent gave him a "Mortimer Snerd" doll, one of Edgar Bergen's most famous characters and a how to tape. He practiced for hours upon hours a day in front of a mirror to perfect his technique. Early on, he began attending a nationwide convention for ventriloquists that held competitions.

Over the years he has only missed one such gathering, but due to his level of mastery in the art, the named him a "retired champion" as other attendees were actually afraid to compete against him. The convention has a museum that has a section devoted solely to him directly next to Edgar Bergen, one of Dunham's idols. His live performances started out at an early age where he performed in front of schools, churches, and other events as a teenager.

While still in high school, he performed in a local car dealership commercial giving him his first on air exposure. During his college years, he would fly around the country to do private parties for corporate events. Once he graduated, he relocated to Los Angeles, California, to pursue his dream of becoming a star with his cast of characters. In 1990, he appeared for the first time on national television on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson . For 12 years following his TV debut, he continued to tour the smaller clubs doing his standup routines and getting bit parts in television shows.

In 2003, he was asked to do a half hour show for the comedy Central network under their title of Comedy Central Presents . Here he debuted his characters Walter, Jose Jalapeno on a Stick, and Melvin the Super Hero Guy. The network was not sure he was right for them and did not give him much more airtime until 2006 where he was given his own one-hour special, which to the network's surprise, garnered two millions viewers. This solidified his position with the network and he was given yet another special in 2007, which brought an even larger following. He continues to appear on television and tour to this day with great reviews.
