Celtic Woman is the brainchild of Sharon Browne and David Downes, who was formerly the musical director for the stage show Riverdance . The group was formed in 2004 with the original lineup of Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Lisa Kelly and Meav Ni Mhaolchatha, and fiddler M?ir?ad Nesbitt. These five had never before performed together and it took six months to get them in shape for their first show. In September of 2004, they were taped for a PBS special in Dublin in front of a sold out venue but the actual airing of the show did not take place until 2005.

The group has released five albums since its inception, all of which have met with great success. To date, they have sold over 6 million copies worldwide and much of this success is credited to their exposure on the PBS stations. The PBS stations have been a driving force behind getting this music to the world by having a show taped and aired after each new album was produced. Their albums have debuted as high as number four on the charts with some of the singles hitting number one worldwide.

Over the years, the band's lineup has changed but the quality of music remains the same. The original members were together for the first year but when Ni Mhaolchatha got pregnant, she was replaced by Deirdre Shannon for the following year. In 2006, Ni Mhaolchatha returned to continue touring with the band and later in the year the band added a sixth member, Hayley Westenra. The band performs only with five members on stage, so the two alternated shows to keep the five member lineup, which has become one of their trademarks.

In order to promote its debut album, the group visited over a dozen cities in the states. They toured the United States two times with their "Celtic Woman: A New Journey" tour in 2008, visiting 88 cities in 2007 and over 75 cities in 2008. In all, the group has performed three tours in the United States as of 2011. In addition, they have completed several tours overseas. Their upcoming tour will be proceed by an album and DVD release along with a PBS special since this formula has worked so well for the group in the past.
