Dixie Chicks History
The Dixie Chicks are composed of lead singer, Natalie Maines and two sisters, Martie Erwin Macguire and Emily Erwin Robison. They were formed in 1989 in Dallas, TX, and over their first few years together, they did not have Natalie as the lead singer. This spot was actually filled by Laura Lynch and included a guitarist by the name of Robin Lynn Macy. Over their first six years together, they concentrated mainly on a bluegrass style to their music but as they evolved, the bands members began to disagree on their direction.
It was during this time that a steel guitar player passed along a demo tape of his daughter, Natalie Maines singing, to the band for consideration. In 1992, they began to seriously alter the direction their music was going, which in turn led to Robin Lynn Macy leaving the group to pursue a solo career in a strictly bluegrass environment. Lynch too, was feeling the change and left the band in 1995 to spend more time at home as the touring the band was doing was beginning to wear on her. With the addition of Maines and the deal with Sony signed that year, the Dixie Chicks became the group the fans know today.
Over the years, the band has produced seven albums and received awards from almost every possible source when it comes to country music. They did however suffer a huge set back with their fan base in 2003 regarding a comment Natalie Maines had made about the President of the United States at the time, George W. Bush. The backlash from her comment led to their music being banned from airplay and their CD sales dropped dramatically. It took an apology from Maines and some time to pass before their fans forgave them and welcomed them back.
During this time, many of the tour dates they had scheduled were actually cancelled or relocated due to poor sales. They subsequently released a song in 2006 titled "Not Ready to Make Nice" in which the band directly addressed the controversy surrounding Mains' statement. This was the band's way of clearing the air with their fans and the world by using the one thing they excelled at-music.
